What are baby teeth? When do children need to have baby teeth extracted?

Baby teeth are a child's first teeth, which play a role in supporting chewing, speaking and maintaining space for permanent teeth. Most baby teeth will fall out on their own, however in some cases a dentist will need to be examined and advised to have them extracted to avoid affecting oral health.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

It is not recommended. Home extraction can lead to broken roots, prolonged bleeding, or gum infection. At the dental clinic, tools are fully sterilized, procedures are precise, and the dentist can check if the permanent tooth underneath is growing in the correct position.

Parents should take their child for extraction when: the baby tooth is very loose but hasn't fallen out; the permanent tooth is erupting underneath or inside while the baby tooth remains firm; or when the baby tooth is severely decayed, with pulpitis, and the dentist advises it cannot be saved.

In reputable dental clinics, the process of extracting a baby tooth is very gentle and painless for the child. The dentist will apply or spray a fruit-flavored gel anesthetic to numb the gums before proceeding, combined with quick, skillful techniques and soothing reassurance to ensure the child feels completely comfortable and unafraid.

Extracting baby teeth at the right time does not affect, and even helps, permanent teeth to grow in the correct position, aligned and orderly. However, if baby teeth are extracted too early (due to severe decay) without using space maintainers, adjacent teeth may shift, causing permanent teeth to lack space, become crowded, or impacted.

If bleeding continues after tooth extraction, parents should take a clean, sterile gauze, roll it up, place it over the socket, and have the child bite down firmly for 15–20 minutes. Most minor bleeding will stop completely. If there is heavy bleeding accompanied by severe pain, parents should immediately take the child back to the dental clinic for the dentist to check and address promptly.
