What is Removable Dental Prosthetics?

Removable Dental Prosthetics (also known as removable dentures) are dentures that replace missing teeth and surrounding tissues, which can be taken out and put back in. This traditional dental method consists of a denture base or a metal framework (made of titanium or metal) with artificial teeth (made of porcelain or plastic) attached on top. The purpose of this method is to restore lost teeth, improve chewing function, aesthetics, and allow easy cleaning of the removable denture. This method is particularly suitable for elderly individuals whose health may not permit dental bridges or implants.

Candidates for Removable Prosthetics

Removable prosthetics are often suitable for:

  • Individuals missing one or several teeth but are unable or unwilling to undergo implants.
  • Individuals missing multiple teeth, especially those with alternating or posterior tooth loss.
  • Individuals missing all teeth on one or both arches.
  • Individuals with insufficient jawbone for implants or seeking a more cost-effective solution.
  • Elderly individuals or those needing a less invasive, easy-to-use, and removable cleaning method.

Removable dentures are used when:

  • The patient has lost 3 or more teeth.
  • Teeth are missing but implants or dental bridges cannot yet be performed.
  • Elderly individuals have lost many teeth but have insufficient jawbone for other methods.
  • Prescribed by a doctor in combination with implant procedures.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Removable dentures themselves do not damage natural teeth, but if you choose partial dentures with metal clasps and have poor oral hygiene, these clasps can wear down enamel where they fit closely, or create food traps leading to cavities and gum inflammation in the remaining natural teeth. Therefore, when wearing partial dentures, it's crucial to thoroughly clean both the natural teeth and the dentures after each meal.

Removable dentures work based on vacuum suction (for full dentures) or clasps that attach to natural teeth (for partial dentures). Initially, the dentures may feel slightly loose when you open your mouth wide or eat chewy foods. To enhance adhesion, you can use specialized denture adhesive as advised by your dentist, ensuring the dentures stay securely in place all day.

During the first 1–2 weeks, your body needs time to adjust to the "foreign object" in your mouth:

Wear the dentures regularly (except when sleeping) to help your gums and oral muscles adapt quickly.

In the early days, eat soft, liquid foods (porridge, soup, mashed rice) and chew slowly and evenly on both sides to prevent the dentures from tipping or irritating the gums.

Practice speaking by reading aloud or engaging in conversations to overcome temporary speech difficulties.

It is absolutely not recommended to wear dentures while sleeping. Dentists always advise removing dentures before going to bed at night. This allows the gum tissues and jawbone underneath to "breathe" and rest after a full day of pressure from the dentures, effectively preventing gum inflammation, gum recession, or oral thrush due to anaerobic conditions. Soak the dentures in a specialized clean water cup overnight!

Allergic reactions to acrylic (a common denture base material) are very rare but can occur in some sensitive individuals, causing itching or redness in the gum area in contact. If you have a history of allergy to this material, don't worry as modern dentistry offers excellent alternatives such as metal framework dentures (minimizing resin contact with gums), high-grade flexible biological resin dentures, or switching to fixed dental implants that do not use resin bases.
