What is cavity filling to prevent tooth decay?

Dental Sealants are the most effective and gentle dental technique to prevent tooth decay for children. The doctor uses a layer of specialized bioplastic glue (Sealant or Glassionomer Cement) to cover the deep, narrow grooves on the chewing surface of the molars. This filling layer makes the tooth surface flatter, prevents food from remaining and prevents bacteria from attacking and causing tooth decay.

Why should we fill pits and grooves to prevent early tooth decay in children?

  • The molar groove is the place where bacteria most easily accumulate:According to dental research, up to 90% of tooth decay in children comes from pits and grooves on the chewing surface of the molars because the bristles cannot penetrate deeply to clean.
  • Young tooth enamel is still thin and weak:During the period of 6 - 12 years old, the enamel of baby teeth and newly grown permanent teeth has not yet completed the calcification process, and has poor acid resistance, so it is very susceptible to corrosion.
  • Releasing Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel:The filling material contains the ingredient Glassionomer that continuously releases Fluoride to help remineralize tooth enamel, increasing the strength of your baby's teeth.
  • No tooth grinding, no pain:The technique of filling pits and grooves completely does not invade real tooth tissue, does not grind teeth, and is performed quickly in 10 - 15 minutes.

Caring for your baby's teeth after filling the pits and grooves

  • Remind your child to brush their teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Avoid letting your child bite objects that are too hard or eat sticky candy that sticks to the chewing surface immediately after filling.
  • Take your child for regular checkups every 3 - 6 months so the doctor can monitor the adhesion of the filling and provide comprehensive oral care.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The optimal time is right when the permanent molars have fully erupted into the dental arch. This is usually around 6 - 7 years old for the first molars (tooth number 6) and 11 - 13 years old for the second molars (tooth number 7).

The sealant can withstand normal chewing forces and provide protection for 3 to 5 years, or even longer if well maintained. During regular 6-month check-ups, the dentist will assess the wear of the Sealant layer and can easily reapply if necessary.

The cost of preventive Sealant is very economical and affordable, typically ranging from 200,000 VND/tooth, depending on the material used and the listed price of each dental clinic. Investing in early pit and fissure sealing helps families save significantly on complex dental treatments (such as root canal therapy, large fillings, or crowns) if the teeth become severely decayed later.

Absolutely not. Sealant is only a protective solution for the chewing surface (where complex pits and fissures are difficult to clean with a toothbrush). Teeth can still be at risk of decay in between teeth or other surfaces if not thoroughly cleaned. Therefore, you and your child must maintain the habit of brushing at least twice a day, combined with using dental floss, interdental brushes, or water flossers and mouthwash regularly.

If the tooth has only slight early decay in the enamel fissure, the dentist can clean and proceed with pit and fissure sealing to prevent the decay from progressing.

However, if the tooth has developed an actual cavity (decay has penetrated the dentin), the preventive Sealant method is no longer suitable, and aesthetic dental filling treatment for decay (drilling out the decayed tissue and sealing the cavity) is required to ensure thorough treatment.
